Eleven

Kate watched in horror as the blade gouged through her skin. blood surged to the furrowed flesh and spilled over, dripping onto her dress. Horrified, she redoubled her efforts to break free and screamed even louder.

She'd never make it. He would kill her like he'd intended all those years when he was alive. Watching all the blood dripping from her body left her light-headed, her body radiating the pain she couldn't fight while blackness reached for her possessively, knowing her fate was sealed.

From the fringes of the blackness, she heard Adam's voice calling out to her.

"Kate--what're you doing?"

She felt Kevin leave her, and her body suddenly collapsed with the free will. Adam interrupted her fall and eased her to the floor, all the while constantly staring at the blood she was losing.

"Why would you do this?" he asked, his voice tinged with desperation.

Even from her twilight state, she felt Adam pick up her arm, examining the wound. "Damn it!" he hissed. His voice sounded so far away. She slipped toward blackness, the only place Kevin wouldn't be able to get at her. But she couldn't do that. Although she wanted to sleep, she fought it and let the pain consume her to remain conscious. As the world came back into focus, she saw that Adam had pulled out his cell and was calling for help.

"Please don't call 911," she whispered, suddenly weaker than she'd felt in a very long time. It was taking so much energy to stay awake.

He looked from her face to the wound. She heard the dispatcher on the line ask, “911. What's your emergency?" He frowned at her pleading expression then made a decision.

"I made a mistake. Sorry." Then he hung up the phone.

"Why would you try to kill yourself?" His defeated tone suggested that he couldn't fathom a reason, and he was right. Kate lived her whole life as a fighter no matter how hard things got. This would never have been a choice she would have made.

"I didn't," she managed, knowing how bad things looked, which had been Kevin's design the whole time. If he didn't kill her, he could make her look like a completely insane idiot, which, all things considered about living people who might believe in her, was probably in its own way worse than dying.

"You had a knife in your hand, Kate, and you were cutting into your wrist. Even the manner of the stroke indicates you trying to kill yourself." Though his words told Kate how convinced he was about her intentions, he put the cell away. "Let me get a towel and see how bad this is." Raking his fingers through his hair, he stood up. "You need to stay conscious, or I won't have a choice about calling 911."

"Okay," she agreed weakly, wondering if she could actually manage it. Before her altercation, the day had been so incredibly tiring. Now her arm was on fire, and it hurt to move much at all. Still, she forced herself
